The faculty of Economics and Rural Development (FERD) was established in
accordance with the University of Gezira law 1975. The first batch of students (Batch 1) was registered in 1978. The university of Gezira started its academic activities with five faculties: Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Science
and Technology (now Technology and Engineering), and the Faculty of Medical Sciences (now the faculty of Medicine and FERD.. The faculty aimed at qualifying human cadres who would be able to shoulder the social, economic and developmental burdens and achieve proper utilization of the Sudanese rural potentials and strengthens them with scientific skills, knowledge and positive
values to make them effective members in the development process. It also aimed at conducting scholarly empirical researches to improve the quality of life of the Sudanese people in general and the rural societies in particular which are riddling with poverty and backwardness. Moreover, the philosophy of the faculty has been based on the philosophy of a “community based” university as a main exile through which community development problems are focused through scientific visions for solution. FERD is also considered as the first faculty in the country that is awarding university degrees in the specializations of Rural Development and Applied Statistics and demography.
