About The Faculty

The faculty of Economics and Rural Development (FERD) was established in accordance with the University of Gezira law 1975. The first batch of students (Batch 1) was registered in 1978. The university of Gezira started its academic activities with five faculties: Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology (now Technology and Engineering), and the Faculty of Medical Sciences (now the faculty of Medicine and FERD.. The faculty aimed at qualifying human cadres who would be able to shoulder the social, economic and developmental burdens and achieve proper utilization of the Sudanese rural potentials and strengthens them with scientific skills, knowledge and positive values to make them effective members in the development process. It also aimed at conducting scholarly empirical researches to improve the quality of life of the Sudanese people in general and the rural societies in particular which are riddling with poverty and backwardness. Moreover, the philosophy of the faculty has been based on the philosophy of a “community based” university as a main exile through which community development problems are focused through scientific visions for solution. FERD is also considered as the first faculty in the country that is awarding university degrees in the specializations of Rural Development and Applied Statistics and demography.

FERD was envisioned as an exciting institution of academic excellence where economics, administrative and social sciences disciplines are applied to community problems with a vision of creating successive generations of development cadre at local, regional and international levels. .

The ultimate message of FERD was to articulate scientific approaches to encapsulate the dramatic changes in the Sudan economy that took place during the last decade of the past century taking into account the impact of globalization that has reshaped economic, social and political focus. These tremendous challenges had been incorporated in FERD message through its curricular structure for the creation of a new generation of graduates who are equipped with the necessary values and technologies of knowledge and skill that would enable them to attain a substantial level of professionalism. An important axiom of this message is the empowerment of faculty staff with academic and research excellence for novel contribution in the enhancement of knowledge with a view of promoting the Sudanese society and its government and private institutions.
